Site Reliability Engineer - Ruby on Rails Developer (Remote)

Quimbee is growing! We’re looking to add a new full-time member to our core team. This position is 100% remote (U.S. only). All you need is an internet connection and a quiet place to work.

We prefer a small and highly effective engineering team, so every new team member is vital to the success of the company.

    Who We’re Looking For

We are looking for our first site-reliability engineer (SRE). As our SRE, you must have strong experience with Ruby on Rails based applications. Ideally, you're an experienced Ruby on Rails developer with a passion for operations tasks.

Your focus will be on improving our deployment practices, maintaining, troubleshooting, documenting, and improving the systems that keep our Heroku hosted system running securely and smoothly with the least downtime possible. Eventually, we might also consider alternative hosting platforms in the future, and we expect you to help with that too. There will be a lot of monitoring, alerting, and prioritizing what is worth our attention and what's not. You're expected to investigate and mitigate single points of failure, performance bottlenecks, slow SQL queries, errors, or any other identified issues trying to solve them yourself or with the help of the other developers in the team.

You'll have the opportunity to help us define and shape processes, tools, and best practices in the context of our platform. You'll work closely with our team of developers to determine the current state of our platform as well as defining the future of it. Strong candidates will bring strong engineering and operations acumen, combined with the ability to move fast (and fix things).

We're looking for collaborative, detail-oriented people who are ready for a challenge. In this role, you'll be responsible for working on the critical task of ensuring our backend systems are rock solid and scalable.

You’ll join a small, 100% remote tech team. Your voice will be heard when we need to make new technical decisions as our product grows. We expect you to go beyond coding to give input on the product roadmap, design, and architecture.

    We look for:
    • A Ruby developer. You have deep software engineering experience and are comfortable writing code in Ruby as well as at least one other programming language.
    • A DevOps advocate. You believe in the benefits of immutable infrastructure and understand what it takes to implement it from the operating-system level up to datacenter deployments.
    • A data-driven engineer. You know the difference between an MTTR and MTTD and have the skills necessary to optimize them.
    • A great process and code debugger. You feel comfortable leading robust and thorough root cause analysis (RCA) sessions to attack problems at their core and ensure they don’t recur.
    • A self-starter. You take responsibility for projects from idea to completion, proactively seeking assistance as needed while guiding the work to successful outcomes.
    • A versatile engineer. You know what you don’t know and feel comfortable learning new skills. You’re not ashamed of recognizing mistakes and take measures to avoid falling again.
    • A team player. You share code ownership as much as possible. You don't mind fixing other people’s code or stepping in to help a teammate.
    • A minimalist. You believe a new feature should be built only when the evidence supports it. You’re willing to push back when you believe this rule is being ignored or violated.
    • A great communicator. You communicate your ideas, feedback, and criticism thoroughly, clearly, and courteously. You believe there’s no such thing as over-explaining or over-clarifying because that’s how miscommunication is avoided.
    • A business-minded engineer. You have a deep understanding of the importance of building maintainable, efficient, clean code while balancing that with the urgency of the business needs.

    Task Examples

Working with us, you could be asked to (solo or as part of a team):
    • Create and maintain documentation about our platform and all the third-party services it depends on, defining a plan of development for failover mechanisms to improve our platform's resilience.
    • Investigate issues reported by our automated systems or our customer support or QA teams, determine impact and root cause, then prioritize and document them, and solve them yourself when possible or sync with our devs team to solve it.
    • Streamline our deployment process so that deployments are as smooth as possible both for our users as well as for our teams, considering the possibility of having to rollback.
    • Educate engineers throughout the company on how to ensure their projects meet our reliability, performance, and security requirements.
    • Reduce the server-side and front-end latency of our application to deliver a lightning-fast user experience.
    • Optimize our hosting bill by increasing throughput and resource efficiency, while planning capacity for the next two years of growth.
    • Determine and configure a core set of metrics and alerts to make sure our apps and servers are running smoothly and that we can react fast if something bad happens.
    • Develop and maintain performance and load tests.
    • Possible on-call responsibilities.
    Requirements
    • Experience hosting apps in Heroku, monitoring, and scaling them up/down
    • B.S. computer science or related field

    • 2+ years of site-reliability engineering (or similar) experience
    • 1+ years of direct Ruby on Rails experience

    • Know how the web works under the hood: TCP, HTTP, DNS, IP, caches, etc.
    • Native fluency in English
    • U.S. based

    Backend Engineer

What would I do at Litmus?

We're looking for engineers to help expand our product line, improve our existing products and help build the next generation of Litmus tools.

Our backend team builds some of Litmus’ core products like Email Previews and Email Analytics.  We expose these as services to customers both inside and outside Litmus.

A typical day for one of our backend engineers would include:

    • Collaborating within our team by participating in scrum activities, regularly checking in with your mentor, attending weekly team meetings, and reviewing pull requests
    • Writing and refactoring code in one of our backend applications, updating internal and external micro services to expose functionality to internal and external engineers, and wrapping all that work up inside Git.
    • Our system is 75% C# and .NET and 25% whatever we need to get the job done including Android / Java / iOS / Xamarain / AppleScript.  On any given day our engineers might need to hop into any of these platforms to complete their work.
    • Working with our Product team to understand product and marketing goals, and work out a good path to implementing them.
    • Working with customer support to investigate and fix bugs.

What is Litmus looking for in a candidate?

    • You have 1-3 years experience working in C#, Java or a similar object oriented language.  We don’t expect you to have experience with everything in our stack - just a willingness to learn and develop your skill set.
    • You have good communication skills. As a distributed team, it’s important that we're able to understand each other, through text or the spoken word, and talk at the appropriate level of abstraction. You communicate clearly and with empathy.   You’re comfortable discussing refactoring options with a developer or working support to solve a customer issue.
    • You write clean, thoughtful code.  You aspire to do things the right way.  You understand it's not only important that something "works".  You value readable, testable code above clever hacks. You're not just writing code for you but for your team.
    • You are eager to collaborate, learn and teach. Our Engineering team is friendly and supportive of each other. We look for opportunities to learn from each other’s experiences.

    Why should I choose Litmus?

We offer everything you'd expect from a financially successful and profitable startup, and we've been going strong for ten years.

    • Great salary and stock options, comprehensive health care benefits, and a generous retirement plan match.
    • 28 days of paid vacation—that’s on top of team retreats and public holidays.
    • Remote-friendly culture. No matter where you are, you'll feel connected to the team. Over half of our employees work remotely.  Your work experience is just as exciting, entertaining, and engaging wherever you choose to work from.
    • Family friendly. Flexible schedules along with generous maternity and paternity policies.
    • Fantastic professional training to keep your skills sharp.
    • The best tools and technology money can buy. Top of the line hardware, software, and whatever else you need to be awesome.

It’s the company you keep. The people at Litmus are truly amazing, each in their own way. With outstanding profitable growth and the trust of more than 250,000 marketers you know you’re part of a winning team.

HashiCorp builds devops tools for modern applications. We build open source tools, and enterprise products on top of them. The HashiCorp suite empowers organizations to provision hybrid cloud infrastructure, secure secrets across distributed applications, and run dynamic resources.

At HashiCorp, we value collaboration and communication skills, both among internal teams and in how we interact with our users. We take care to balance and be responsive to the needs of our open source community as well as our enterprise level customers.

Terraform Providers are the plugins written in Go that implement Terraform resources and data sources, bridging cloud APIs with Terraform's declarative configuration language. Providers are complex, and to ensure the success of our Provider developers, we create tools, APIs, and documentation to make high-quality Provider development and maintenance easier.

We want you to contribute to development and maintenance of Terraform Providers in tight collaboration with the large and growing Terraform community, utilizing operations and engineering skills to work across a diverse set of infrastructure providers.

In this role, you can expect to:

    • Support integrations with new and existing infrastructure providers
    • Help support open source contributors, new and seasoned, with supportive and constructive code review, documentation improvements, and workflow changes
    • Advocate and support improvements to Terraform APIs and core to improve development and integration of providers
    • Work on issues and improvements in Terraform Providers critical to the success of HashiCorp customers and the broader community

You may be a good fit for our team if you have some combination of:

    • Comfort with Go
    • Experience with customer support or OSS community support (to help interface with the Terraform community)
    • Interest in infrastructure management concepts and ecosystem
    • Some experience with Terraform

HashiCorp embraces diversity and equal opportunity. We are committed to building a team that represents a variety of backgrounds, perspectives, and skills. We believe the more inclusive we are, the better our company will be.

      Senior PHP Engineer

SkyVerge is looking for a talented full-stack senior PHP engineer to join our team and help build our portfolio of WordPress plugins for WooCommerce. You'll write code that helps power mission-critical tools for millions of online stores.

      The Role
You’ll focus on building new features and maintaining existing code, while also helping with code reviews and customer support. With over 60 different plugins, there’s a wide variety of work. You might spend time on some complicated frontend interactions using JS, then switch focus to working with a tricky external REST API for a while, and later work on adding unit/acceptance tests to our framework code.

You’ll have the opportunity to really dive into a problem and understand it before crafting a well-engineered, high quality solution. We believe the best work happens when given lots of uninterrupted time to think and code.

Our plugins are built on top of WordPress and designed to work with WooCommerce, so we use PHP 5.3+ (moving soon to PHP 5.6 minimum) and we write all new JS in ES6. We follow a superset of the WordPress coding standards and actively invest in tooling & testing to improve both the quality of our products and the happiness of our team building them.

We work primarily through GitHub and Slack, so you should be able clearly express your ideas via comments and messages. All new code is tested and peer-reviewed, so you’ll be able to both learn from the rest of the team and share your knowledge.

As one of our senior engineers, the team will look to you for advice and direction. You’ll help shape our best practices, decide on libraries & tooling, and refactor older or underperforming parts of the codebase. You’ll also be responsible for moving your projects forward, communicating your progress and milestones with others, and clearly documenting your work.

Here are some things you may do on a given day:

      • Research and write a pitch to refactor the data model for our shipping extension

      • Refactor an underperforming class after profiling it in your local environment

      • Troubleshoot an issue with our Memberships plugin by deep-diving into the content restriction class

      • Analyze a slow SQL query and suggest ways to improve it

      • Construct a detailed, multi-step data migration to move data from a custom post type to a custom table, write unit tests for it, and manually user test / QA it.

      • Review a pull request from another team member for readability, maintainability, and adherence to standards, and provide suggested improvements

      • Review new API documentation for one of our integration plugins and draft a story to upgrade to it

On the first day you will:

      • Meet your team and get familiar with how we work

      • Setup your local environment and tooling

      • Commit a small tweak to a plugin and open a pull request for peer review

In the first week you will:

      • Develop, QA, review, and ship a small feature improvement

      • Participate in code review for a teammate’s code

      • Help a team member with fixing a bug

In the first month you will:

      • Work closely with the product team to ship a large feature

      • Participate in your first support rotation week and help our support team with escalated issues

      • Handle deploying a set of plugin releases using our internal tools

      • Publish a retrospective on your first large project to share successes & planned improvements for the next project

      You
You love solving engineering challenges in the most pragmatic way possible. You write code that's clear, readable, and standards-compliant. More importantly, you keep the end user in mind and love getting feedback from customers to help improve our products.

Finally, you can’t wait to join a small team that loves their work as much as you do, affords the opportunity to work on challenging & interesting projects, continuously learn and improve, and constantly ship your work. You’re an excellent writer and can communicate effectively whether drafting up a bug report, chatting in Slack, editing a wiki page, or drafting a retrospective. You know that code is about communication and explaining your thought process clearly goes hand-in-hand.

Our team is fully-remote and we communicate primarily through Slack, Clubhouse, Google Docs, Basecamp, and weekly stand-ups via Zoom (a few short meetings) — we believe the best work happens when given lots of uninterrupted time that’s free of distractions.

As a remote team, we believe that regular meetups are invaluable for getting to know each other better, so you should be available for 1-2 company-paid team trips per year. Curious about what those are like? Check out our recap of our last team retreat (SkyTrip), which brought the entire team out to Lake Tahoe, California for a week. It’s a plus if you think (like we do) that bears are absolutely the coolest animals in the forest.

This is a full-time, salaried position, but hours are flexible. We know your work will speak for itself with commits, issues closed, and wiki edits.

      Process
After an initial screening, you’ll get an email with a few questions to answer. Following that, you’ll have a few 45 minute phone chats with different people on our team to learn more about you and answer any questions you have about the position and company.

The most qualified candidates will then be invited to complete a short one-day research project. If this goes well, we’ll invite you to the final stage of our evaluation process: the trial project. During this 1-2 week period, you’ll work closely with our team as a paid contractor to develop & ship a small feature. This gives you an opportunity to make sure you enjoy the work and the team, and it gives us an opportunity to evaluate your work. We’ll have regular chats each week to share feedback and make sure we’re on the same page. At the end of the project, if all goes well, you’ll be offered a permanent position. 🙂

      Benefits
Here are some benefits we're happy to offer to our team members:

      • Competitive salary
      • Annual incentive for meeting team and company goals
      • 27 days of paid time-off, in addition to 2 company holidays (SkyVerge Day in March, Founders Day in June 😀)
      • Medical, Dental, and Vision insurance for US and Canadian residents and their families (reimbursements for comparable care for non-US/Canadian residents)
      • 401k/RRSP Retirement plan with 4% company match for US/Canadian residents (contributions to comparable plans for non-US/Canadian residents)
      • Up to 8 weeks paid parental leave for new mothers and fathers
      • Work flexible hours from anywhere that has a reliable internet connection
      • Tools (hardware/software) to help you be productive
      • Allowance for professional growth (books, courses, conferences)
      • Home office or co-working allowance
      • A Kindle to help you keep learning

We support workplace diversity and do not discriminate on any protected class. We believe when we work together as a team of different views, experiences, and ideas, we can build amazing things.

Please apply directly through the link below. Applications accepted through February 15th.

      Remote Bilingual Customer Service Representative

      What We Do

There are more hungry people in New York than there are citizens of San Francisco. That’s not ok.

At Lemontree we show up every day at work and solve this problem. We’re a non-profit that sells family dinner. Our systemic solution helps low-income families set the table with a dignified, affordable and healthy dinner. We deliver meal-kits with everything a parent needs to cook a delicious meal for just $2 per serving.

      The Opportunity

We’re expanding our service and looking for an empathetic, caring, bilingual customer service representative to give our customers the support they deserve. This opportunity entails ~10-20 hours of work per week from home.

Our non-profit’s mission is to provide dignity to our customers. As our second ever customer service representative, you’ll be on the front lines. Every day you will build relationships with our customers and make them feel great.

As an early member of our customer service team, you’ll help us write our playbook for what amazing customer service looks like. In addition to that you will be responsible for:

      • Responding to incoming customer questions, concerns, and orders
      • Entering customer orders into our order management system (Zoho)
      • Gathering customer feedback on our product
      • Translating copy from English to Spanish
      • Special projects as needed

We want our customers to get the best service possible. To make that possible, we’ll count on you to respond to all incoming messages within 1 hour of receipt (between 10am-8pm EST)

You'll have ~10-20 hours of remote work from the comfort of your home, favorite cafe, or coworking space! As it is a remote role you will need your own laptop and consistent internet access (although some of the work can be done from a smartphone).

      Who You Are

      • Fluent in writing both Spanish and English
      • Empathetic and cheerful with a drive to helping others
      • Passionate about hospitality and making people feel cared for
