Release Manager (Ruby/Python/React) - Small Team - 100% Remote, Flexible Hours

Analytics Fire builds custom software for the solar power industry. We’re looking for a collaborative but hands-on Release Manager to help us scale our execution to support additional new high-tech sectors.

Analytics Fire is a deeply technical engineering organization. Most of us are software engineers and spend the majority of our time on heads down engineering activities like coding. Our goal in creating this position is to expand our small client-facing team with a unique person that has both the personality and the technical skillset to help guide software releases through planning, development, deployment, release, and DevOps processes.

This position is similar to that of a technical Program Manager, but you will be much more involved in the technical details and hurdles around software deployments and releases than a traditional Project Manager would be. Our ideal candidate is a current or former Software Engineer, DevOps Engineer, or Site Reliability Engineer that is willing to be trained in formal Program Management processes (or has already been trained in formal Program Management processes).

As a small company, Analytics Fire is able to tailor roles around the strengths of our individual team members. We will tailor this role to your specific technical background. However, it is a hard requirement that you are able to support the following 3 types of responsibilities:

  • (a) Represent Analytics Fire software engineering teams in client-facing interactions (clarifying requirements, negotiating technical approaches, reporting on status, etc).
  • (b) Technical writing responsibilities such as documenting requirements, project plans, system architecture, etc.
  • (c) Making meaningful contributions to the execution of complex software projects.

For reference, here is a list of some technologies we are currently actively using on a day-to-day basis:
  • JavaScript: React / Angular / Typescript / GraphQL
  • Back-end: Ruby / Python / Node
  • Embedded (IoT): C, Embedded Linux, MQTT
  • Embedded (robotics): C/C++, ROS
  • Modern software techniques: RESTful APIs, SOA, PaaS, etc
  • Agile collaboration and DevOps tools: Github, Trello, Slack, Chef, Ansible, Docker, Vagrant, etc
  • Other technologies we are currently building with: AWS, GCP, TensorFlow, OpenCV, Yocto, Salesforce platform, iOS, ARKit

Description of responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain well-coordinated relationships with key internal and client-side stakeholders to help drive decision making around production software releases and DevOps.
  • Participate in collaborative planning discussions and technical decision making early in the project lifecycle to ensure that key decisions are made with reliability, testability, and DevOps in mind.
  • Monitor and oversee coordination, integration, flow of development, testing, and deployment around multiple parallel projects and threads of engineering execution.
  • Drive planning and delivery of high quality software releases:
  • Manage change control process during releases
  • Continuously improve company release processes
  • Proactively identify and mitigate risks and remove obstacles to releases
  • Personally plan and participate in software release activities. Advise and support the team so that they can take on less critical releases on a day-to-day basis.
  • Continually integrate the QA team and testing engineers into both the requirements gathering and software development processes and report status to clients on a very frequent basis.

  • This is a remote position but is only open to candidates living in the US or Canada. (Note: we may be open to US or Canadian citizens living abroad in US-overlapping time zones on a case by case basis.) We’re flexible about location and hours. We’re a really great match for candidate who wants to work hard on interesting projects, while also having flexibility around time and geography.

    Skills & Requirements

    “Must have” requirements:
    • Soft skills necessary to develop and maintain well-coordinated relationships with key internal and client-side stakeholders to help drive decision making around production software releases and DevOps.
    • 3+ years hands experience as a full stack Software Engineer, DevOps Engineer, or Site Reliability Engineer, ideally within a commercial startup environment.
    • Familiarity with current modern best practices around software development, data engineering, and DevOps
    • Ability and willingness to familiarize yourself with the specific technical stacks that we use.
    • Superior organization and detail orientation.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Willingness to design, document, and evangelize new engineering processes to meet evolving organizational requirements.

    “Nice to have” requirements:
    • Hands-on technical experience writing code in Ruby, Python, or JavaScript
    • Previous experience as a technical Program Manager.

      Backend Engineer

What would I do at Litmus?

We're looking for engineers to help expand our product line, improve our existing products and help build the next generation of Litmus tools.

Our backend team builds some of Litmus’ core products like Email Previews and Email Analytics.  We expose these as services to customers both inside and outside Litmus.

A typical day for one of our backend engineers would include:

      • Collaborating within our team by participating in scrum activities, regularly checking in with your mentor, attending weekly team meetings, and reviewing pull requests
      • Writing and refactoring code in one of our backend applications, updating internal and external micro services to expose functionality to internal and external engineers, and wrapping all that work up inside Git.
      • Our system is 75% C# and .NET and 25% whatever we need to get the job done including Android / Java / iOS / Xamarain / AppleScript.  On any given day our engineers might need to hop into any of these platforms to complete their work.
      • Working with our Product team to understand product and marketing goals, and work out a good path to implementing them.
      • Working with customer support to investigate and fix bugs.

What is Litmus looking for in a candidate?

      • You write clean, thoughtful code.  You aspire to do things the right way.  You understand it's not only important that something "works".  You value readable, testable code above clever hacks. You're not just writing code for you but for your team.

Request for Proposals: Mobile Constituent Relationship Management System (REMOTE)

      Request for Proposals:

Comprehensive Mobile Constituent Relationship Management System

      Project Overview

As mobile organizing becomes increasingly central to MoveOn’s ability to have impact, our Mobile Team seeks to hire a firm to provide a comprehensive mobile constituent relationship management system.

As we move into the second half of Trump’s first and hopefully only term, your mobile CRM will support our ongoing resistance to Trump and Republicans’ attacks on so many communities and our democracy as a whole. MoveOn members’ use of your mobile CRM will also help to build power for the progressive movement, building on the success of recent mass mobilizations, as well as November’s blue wave. Ultimately, our use of your mobile CRM will help advance our vision of a post-Trump America in which white supremacy, patriarchy, and all forms of bigotry and greed are retreating, corporations and the billionaire class have lost their stranglehold on Washington, and core progressive values such as equality, sustainability, justice, and love increasingly guide our society’s choices.

More specifically, we will use your platform to organize millions of MoveOn members to take action via text and SMS as part of campaigns ranging from passing the Dream Act to ending the war in Yemen to building support for Medicare for All.

Mobile organizing has become an increasingly important mechanism for MoveOn to organize activists and mobilize them to attend events, make phone calls to advocacy campaign targets, chip in funding for our campaigns, and take other actions. Your mobile CRM will be a crucial part of our Mobile Team’s ability to conduct this work.

In our external campaigning as well as our internal work together as a team, we seek to advance core values of equity and inclusion, including a commitment to identifying and uprooting unjust oppression. We know social identities including race, gender, immigration status, gender identity, religion, sexual orientation, age, ability, and more can show up in organizations and the movement in ways that provide unfair advantages to some while unfairly disadvantaging others. We will expect that to the extent you are interacting with our team, you will partner with us in supporting equity and opposing oppression.

      MoveOn’s Background

MoveOn is the largest independent progressive advocacy group in the United States. MoveOn is where millions mobilize for a better society—one in which everyone can thrive.

Whether it's supporting a candidate, passing legislation, or changing our national culture, MoveOn members are committed to an inclusive and progressive future. We envision a world marked by equality, sustainability, justice, and love. And we mobilize together to achieve it.

Over the past 20 years, MoveOn members have been part of game-changing victories and have worked together to play a leading role in ending the war in Iraq, passing landmark legislation such as health care reform, and advancing the cause of economic fairness. Since the 2016 election, we have formed a pillar of the resistance to Donald Trump. MoveOn Political Action’s 2018 “Resist & Win” election work led to hundreds of thousands of additional votes for Democratic candidates nationwide.

We should note that, within this project, you will do work for both MoveOn Civic Action and MoveOn Political Action, a 501(c)(4) and federal political action committee, respectively. Your proposal will be for both entities, and you may be asked, at MoveOn’s discretion, to enter a separate contract with each entity or to divide any fixed fee between them and allocate per-message charges based on actual usage by each entity.

      Project Goals and Deliverables

We seek a vendor who can provide a comprehensive mobile constituent relationship management system, including the following:

      • A 2-way SMS broadcast tool capable of sending

      • 1M SMS messages in 5 minutes and

      • 1M MMS 850kb messages in 60 minutes.

    • Custom audience creation and report building, without hard limits on upload or download size.

    • Variable access levels for users.

    • Call-routing system with congressional, state legislative, gubernatorial, and AG target data and available customization, for incoming patch-throughs as well as outgoing calls. System must work for these use cases:

      • User dials 800 number and we route them to correct target (incoming).

      • User submits phone number + ZIP on a form, we dial them and then route them to correct target (outgoing).

    • Robust and well-documented API to facilitate integration with our data warehouse and the creation of custom software solutions.

    • First-tier aggregator and/or direct-carrier relationships.

    • 99.9% uptime guarantee.

      Contract Timeline

The contract will likely run from April 1, 2019, through December 31, 2020.

      Budget

Competitive proposals will cost $.01/sms or less, $.03/mms or less, and $.10/connected call minute or less.

      • Intuitive user experience.

      • Extent and documentation of the API.

      • Uptime guarantee.

      • Client support services (how much dedicated agent time, tech support response time, etc.).

      Scala Backend Developer

Narrative is building the first global data marketplace. It has often been said that data is the new currency. Unfortunately, maximizing the value of data is often easier said than done. On one side, transacting via individual point to point integrations carries a lot of overhead in both business development and technical integration efforts. On the other, going through big aggregators introduces opacity in the pricing and provenance of the data. At Narrative, we help our customers get value from their data by building a central auction platform to reduce the friction and tooling to increase the transparency in this process.

We are a small, early stage team looking for great developers who want to jump in and take major systems and user-facing features from design to launch. Here’s where we are now:

      • We are operating in Amazon Web Services. Our services are mainly deployed on EC2 provisioned with Terraform.
      • We also heavily use other technology on AWS such as DynamoDB, S3, and RDS.
      • Our backend includes a data ingestion web service with supporting Kinesis consumers, along with a growing array of Spark projects. It’s written mostly in Scala, with a smattering of Python for lambda functions.
      • We sit somewhere in the middle of the “Scala as a worse Haskell” and “Scala as a better Java” spectrum. We love functional programming and we do make use of libraries like cats, but at the same time we heavily favor core language features and have no intention of rewriting everything using Free Monads.
      • Our web app UI is written in Typescript with Angular2 and a supporting API running on Node, and is deployed and monitored using much the same supporting tech as the backend.
      • Other services we use include: GitHub, CircleCI, DataDog.

Here are some examples of projects that we would like some help with:

        • Data analytics pipelines to drive the interactive report UIs. For example: reports for yield forecasting and deal pre-qualification.
        • Implementing additional infrastructure to support transactions for more types of data.
        • Improving the latency and resource usage of our transaction processes.

          The ideal candidate should:

          • Have experience in a typed functional language such as Scala or F#, or significant experience in their non-functional equivalents (Java, C#) with an interest in Scala.
          • Have experience working with non-trivial quantities of data. As of this writing, our ingestion pipelines are handling something on the order of 500GB .snappy.parquet files per day. Prior work with Spark would be ideal, but experience with similar MapReduce-based technologies would also be helpful.
          • Have experience operating in a cloud environment like Amazon Web Services, Google Compute Engine, or similar.
          • Be able to work across all aspects of back end systems, from application code to SQL to systems administration.
          • Not be afraid of contributing to the entire stack (from the UI to Devops) when the need arises.

We are not looking for a 100% fit on all the technology buzzwords, but we are looking for someone with strong technical skills who is eager to pick up new technologies as necessary.

We are building the team with a remote-first mindset, and as a result every team member is expected to have an ability to synthesize business requirements, distill the domain, contribute to high-level design documents, efficiently communicate asynchronously, and more generally work autonomously toward a shared vision.

Continuously investing in quality (code quality, tests, pull request reviews, refactoring…) is part of our strategy to sustainably maximize the business value we deliver.

Request for Proposals: Graphic Design Work, MoveOn

Request for Proposals: Ongoing Graphic Design Work

            Project Overview

We seek a firm to provide ongoing graphic design production capacity that plays an important role in our grassroots organizing and advocacy campaigning in 2019, with a production load of up to 300 graphic images advancing a variety of progressive causes.

The images you create will support the ongoing resistance to Trump and Republicans’ attacks on various communities and our democracy as a whole. Your work will also help to build power for the progressive movement, building on the success of recent mass mobilizations, as well as November’s blue wave. You’ll create images supporting progressive champions, as well as holding elected officials accountable when they act against the public interest.

As the primary producers of images for MoveOn—an organization with a vital role in mobilizing millions of activists—you will help educate the public, inspire people to take action, and pressure campaign targets to do the right thing.

The graphics you most frequently produce will be for social media, which we will share via our Facebook (1.6 million fans), Instagram (90,000 followers), and Twitter (328,000 followers) networks, as well as other channels. But we will also call on you to design a variety of other content, including images for emails and text messages to millions of MoveOn members, videos, our website, one-pagers, stickers, rally signs, billboards, T-shirts, and wrapped vehicles.

Some of our design work will be planned in advance with weeks or even months of prior notice, but much of it is often of a rapid response-nature: Something happens in the world, and we seek to respond within the news cycle, while the public is paying attention and mass mobilization has the highest potential for impact.

Your design work will tell our story of progressive people power and advance the brand we launched in the spring of 2018: brand.moveon.org.

You will join morning editorial meetings with our Video Lab and social media teams and others throughout the organization to develop social image ideas, and you will be able to make design capacity available on short notice in response to timely requests. You will collaborate closely with a wide range of MoveOn staff, including our communications, campaigns, and other teams, incorporating feedback and iterating on designs.

We will expect you to partner with us in supporting equity and opposing oppression as we collaborate together.

We should note that, within this project, you will do work for both MoveOn Civic Action and MoveOn Political Action, a 501(c)(4) and federal political action committee, respectively. Your proposal should name both entities, and you will be responsible for calculating and reporting to us which proportion of your work each month was for which entity.

            Project Deliverables

            Topline deliverable:

            • Production of up to 300 images a month, ranging from graphics for social media to ads to many other forms of graphic design for a wide variety of purposes.

            Other deliverables:

            • Produce consistently excellent designs that carry our visual identity and that connect with and move those who view them. The designs must tell compelling stories and inspire people to take action.

            • Make a timely response to design requests, producing urgent images within 4 hours of a request (or faster) during regular working hours and being able to provide occasional timely coverage on evenings and weekends when asked in advance or in some response moments.

            • Collaborate effectively with our staff to ensure that the image concepts you execute successfully carry our message and advance our campaign and organizational objectives.

            • Advance the values of equity and inclusion and oppose oppression in the content you produce and in the ways in which you interact with our team.

            • Collaborate in establishing and managing a process for image design requests, edits, tracking, and approval, as well as image archival.

            • Join meetings, including our weekly communications meetings and our daily morning editorial meetings, where you will pitch ideas for timely quote graphics, memes, Instagram story content, and other images tied to the daily news cycle.

            • Ensure that we have the right to use any content you deliver to us.

            • Bill us regularly and accurately, differentiating between work conducted for MoveOn Civic Action and MoveOn Political Action.

            Contract Timeline

The contract will likely run from April 1, 2019, through December 31, 2020.

            Budget

Competitive proposals will be under $15,000 a month, at a flat monthly, rather than hourly, rate.

            Criteria for Selection

            • Demonstrated ability to deliver high-quality graphic design work reliably at the scale and speed we desire.

            • Portfolio of relevant work.

            • Demonstrated commitment to advancing equity and anti-oppression in the outward-facing work you produce as well as within your firm.

            • Your team’s ability to collaborate closely with the MoveOn team.

            • Ability to stay on budget and track projects and billing effectively.

            • Firm’s electronic security and data protection practices.

            • Financial stability of firm.

            Senior Software Engineer (C++)

            About Us

Mokriya takes software seriously. We’re pragmatic crafters who believe in smart and focused development, building clients’ products just as we do our own: investing heavily in design, iterating rapidly to validate and falsify ideas, and pursuing perfection in every interaction. We learned a lot of interesting things along the way about the right way to ship software, and we're now bringing our incredible software product experience to larger companies like Verizon, Google, Intel, Twitter, Sony, L'Oréal— and we do this all with a fully distributed team.

We believe that well-made software can change the world, no matter how small or simple a product might be. We also believe that poorly-made software —badly-designed, badly-developed, or badly-supported— is a preventable tragedy.

Mokriya’s mission is to make great software: for ourselves, for our clients and most importantly for our users.

            About You
You love to build. When you're not at your job, you're probably tinkering on some contraption in the basement or figuring out how to take apart . You get a thrill from figuring out a clever way to solve a problem. You are a good software tester with strong programming fundamentals and you really take pride in knowing the ins and outs of the programming languages and libraries you are working on. You are a product-focused Engineer that cares about details and—this is obvious—you take pride in your work.
If this sounds like you, and you've been working on C++, you should apply. We strongly encourage and are proponents of diversity.

Why should I be excited to work here?
First, it’s fun. Not in the “everyone pretend to have fun, we’re a startup, where are the Nerf guns?” way, either. It’s fun to work at Mokriya because beyond the perks and good times, we’re a happy team of people who love to design and build great products. It’s not just that we have a great organizational structure in which everyone is really empowered to act; it’s also that we hire for fit and bring in folks only if we’re confident in their integrity, capability, and drive.
No one will watch over your shoulder, and you won't have to spend time watching over anyone else's either. We’re a talented team of doers. There’s little bureaucracy, and we hate blocking. Our product managers spend their time making sure you can get things done in the way that best suits your preferences and the project needs.
Autonomy, creativity, thoughtfulness, trust: if you care about those things, you'll be happy here. And more importantly, we'd be honored to hire you.

            • iOS Swift Application - Many of our customers, like us, support remote workforces on the go and they require us to enable their customer teams to work at any time from anyplace and having a mobile application is paramount to enabling this.
            • iOS SDK - Many of our customers have iOS apps that would benefit from in-app support conversations and self-service articles powered by Help Scout. Our Objective-C SDK will enable our customer’s iOS apps to embed these capabilities easily, and customize them as needed. Your team performs engineering support when a question stymies our in-house customers team or comes directly to you via developer support requests on GitHub. We’ll get you up-to-speed with engineering support so you can help our customers, developer community and improve the product along the way.
            • Everything is secondary to the customer experience. We expect you to have a keen sense of how your code will impact performance, security, and usability.
            • You'll be working with product people that challenge you to get better every day. The founders are technical and committed to creating a magical experience for customers. You'll deploy work that moves the needle for businesses around the world.
