40 : remote jobs for you

Senior Software Engineer

With over 35k active users for our essential Shopify apps we've followed the rapid growth of Shopify and are looking to add a senior engineer to our 100% remote team of five.

As a Senior Software Engineer you'll have worked with React and Rails before and developed a decent-sized web app using the Flux pattern (with Redux, Flux or Alt). You can both architect software, building it from the ground up, and maintain existing systems in a thoughtful way.

Just as important is how you approach problems and work in the team. We don't want someone who puts their headphones on for three days and churns out code. Your instinct is to collaborate.

You'll work closely with our product manager to gather requirements, come up with technical solutions, present these in a clear non-technical way and agree on what to do.

You'll both mentor and learn from our software engineer through code reviews and working on problems together. And you'll help the team understand your changes, how best to test them and be responsive in fixing bugs.

We're 100% remote across different timezones so clear, regular communication is key. Your location isn't important as long as there's a roughly 4 hour overlap with Eastern Time and European Time.

You're experienced in working remotely and have found a schedule and setup that works best for you. If that's a coworking space we can pay for that, but that's optional since you decide where you're at your most productive.

Skills & Experience

  • 1+ years backend experience (Rails, Laravel, Django etc.)

  • 2+ years React with Redux, Flux or Alt

  • 5+ years software engineering

  • Have worked on web apps, ideally B2B SaaS

  • Software architecture

  • Have used a few different software patterns

  • Very collaborative

  • Clear non-technical communicator

  • Have worked remotely

  • Curious about new technologies

  • Ideally have worked with Kanban

Full time, 100% remote from any location with a 4 hour overlap with Eastern Time and European Time. We believe strongly in work/life balance with reasonable hours (usually 37.5 hours or occasionally more when required). We're a UK company with compensation and paid time off to match.

Our idea of the perfect candidate would be someone that sees the large picture, comes up with multiple solutions, and hops in a variety of roles of our business. This could range from improving performance of specific components, creating a back-end service, killing two minutes off the build time, creating an entire new design for specific sections, or setting up A/B testing. There are a wide-range of problems we want to accomplish and we’re looking for the right individual to tackle them with us. We’re a small team with a lot of room to grow and we’re hoping you can grow with us!

Responsibilities

  • As a senior engineer at Yobi, you will be expected to jump in where you’re needed on a variety of applications.

  • As our team grows you will rotate responsibility for code-reviews, mentorship, and overall guidance of our newbies.

  • Obviously, as the listing states, you should know React and the Node ecosystem pretty darn well. This application has been alive for about 3 years and we’re pretty happy about where it’s at. However, we know it can be better and we want to hire someone that makes us look like schmucks.

  • You’ll be expected to get your assigned work done within the allotted time discussed by the team. We use Wrike to track our work and generally use it as a sprint-style Kanban board. Generally, we’re online and available for 8 hours of the day. If you need to take a breather in the middle of the day, go for it.

  • We have a distributed system of services and APIs that are consumed by the client application. We’d like experience with AWS as that’s the backbone of our architecture and we don’t have a full time operations team.

  • Although we don’t require testing of our components or utilities, we’d really like to start making that a requirement. We’re currently using Jest and Enzyme for React and Mocha for Node. Familiarity with those tools and writing your code in a way that can be tested is preferred.

  • Understanding design patterns, code smell, front-end architecture, and back-end architecture is strongly preferred.

Yobi Benefits

  • $90,000 Salary

  • Employee Stock Options

  • $3,000 Equipment Allowance

  • $1,000 Education Budget

  • Software paid for

React Engineer

The team

The web engineering team is responsible for all things unsplash.com.

We use modern and well-supported tools to build the best possible version of our product in collaboration with the API and design teams.

At a high level, the web architecture consists of a Node server (TypeScript), with React for rendering on both the server and client.

Over the years, we’ve taken Unsplash from a humble Tumblr blog to a fully-fledged web app supporting tens of millions of users and tons of useful features. At the same time, we’ve improved its performance by leveraging modern techniques like SSR, dynamic chunk-splitting, CDN HTML caching, complex state management using memoization and Observables, etc. We’ve done all that with a lean team of just 2 web developers: frequent code releases and in-depth code reviews help us share knowledge and identify problems early. But there’s still so much more to learn and do, and that’s why we need you!

We designed our company in a way to get as much of the stuff that’s not the creative work out of your way, so you can do your best work. We don’t believe in a top-down, shoulder-tapping, 9–5 type culture. You have the autonomy to manage yourself. We don’t work set hours. We respect flow. We believe you should be able to structure your days for what makes you feel the most energized and creative.

A glance at some of our blog posts and open source work can give you an idea on how we approach and solve our problems:

Recently open sourced libraries:

Recent blog posts:

You
If you tick (most of) these boxes, you should get in touch with us:

  • You’re comfortable being part of a small, autonomous and distributed team.
  • Being a small team, we dive into everything. You are comfortable working across the full stack, from writing CSS to fine tuning a CDN—although we don’t expect you to know these skills upfront, but you should be willing to learn them when they become necessary.
  • You’re a quick learner who’s able to pick up new concepts whenever necessary.
  • You’re able to adequately prioritize between improving UX, optimizing performance, and building new features.
  • You’re comfortable with React.
  • You care about the end-product beyond just writing the code that makes it work.

It’s a bonus if you have experience with:

  • TypeScript, Redux, Reselect, Observables.
  • front-end performance (e.g. optimising page load, page layout, and React rendering).
  • building a large-scale app

Our team is made up of people who enjoy making things people love. We care about details and we care about quality.

  • Generous vacation: 3 weeks MINIMUM vacation.
  • Work from home: We’re a remote first company.
  • Workshops/conferences: Conferences & Learning budget.
  • Company retreats: Team retreats 1-2 times a year.
  • Relocation: If you’d like to relocate to Montreal, we provide $8,000 lump sum to cover out-of-pocket costs associated with relocation
  • Flexible hours: You manage your time. You set your working hours.
  • Maternal/Paternal leave: If you have a baby, you’re paid for any time you need to take off. The time you take off will be your judgment. This is an important time and we don’t want to be deciding which days you should be taking off or not. We’ll be there for you. If we feel the balance is not quite right or if you have any questions, we’ll chat.
  • Pet friendly: Obviously if you work from home, but also if you relocate to Montreal. Our office is pet friendly.

If you want to work with us, all we want to see is a message from you. Please don’t send a resume. Instead, tell us who you are. Show us relevant things you’ve done that you’re excited about.
