Senior Ruby/JS Developer

Replay Poker (www.replaypoker.com) is a free-to-play online poker site whose mission is to spread the joy of poker to the world in a fair, friendly and competitive environment, without the risk of losing your shirt.

Our vision is to be the go-to place for passionate poker players to play great poker and improve their game. We will succeed by offering an exceptional poker game experience and never losing our players trust. We celebrate the world’s greatest card game, its rich history and tradition, and seek to inspire others to share in our passion.

Our core values

We’re big on our company culture, and keen on hiring like-minded people. So it’s important you share our values:

  • We put the needs of our players and community first
  • We act with humility and treat others with respect
  • We voice our opinions, but we’re open to new ideas
  • We believe in taking ownership of ourselves and our work
  • We recognise time is precious and not to be wasted
  • We strive for excellence, but we’re not perfectionists
  • We value a positive and flexible work life

The role

We are a small, but growing team, of highly technical and experienced developers, which means you’ll have a huge impact on the decisions and the work being done. We all work remotely, 100% of the time. We’re currently spread out across Europe and South America.

You’ll be responsible for maintaining and creating new features on all of our systems. These include the poker game client/server, poker lobby and not-quite-so-exciting auxiliary services (scheduling etc).

We have a huge array of interesting problems to solve such as hunting down and killing the (thankfully) occasional performance issue, adding new features to bring happiness to our players and operations team, taking old code which has seen better days and refactoring it into something new and shiny that we can all be proud of, and much more. You’ll own the product as much as any of us and take collective responsibility in maintaining and improving it over time.

We look for smart and independent people who work best in a team where everyone pulls their weight and collaborates with each other. Proactivity is key so we can improve and expand our systems without micromanagement. You will be given some freedom and with that comes responsibility (insert Spider-Man quote here).

We are not afraid of using new technologies when we have to, but know that sometimes boring technology is the best solution. Using the best tools for the job is taken seriously and we expect everyone to be flexible enough to learn and use them.

Our stack

  • Poker lobby: Rails 4, a single page application with Backbone.js
  • Poker game server: written in Ruby
  • Poker game client: Flash - ActionScript 2.0 (in maintenance mode) and a new React/JS client in progress
  • Other technologies used: MySQL, Sidekiq, Redis, NodeJS, Go, Kubernetes and many more

You will

  • Have expert knowledge of Ruby and its surrounding environment
  • Have expert knowledge of SQL and databases
  • Have expert knowledge of Unix
  • Have expert knowledge of HTML5 and modern CSS (Less/Sass)
  • Have 5+ years of Ruby development experience
  • Have experience using modern JavaScript on the web (with or without a framework)
  • Have experience writing automated tests, be it BDD, TDD, etc
  • Have a good understanding of HTTP and REST-ful APIs
  • Be confident working with git, code review and pull requests
  • Be eager to learn and able to express your thoughts, arguments, and ideas clearly and effectively
  • Have excellent english language skills (fluent speaking)

Ideally you should

  • Have experience with React/Backbone
  • Have experience with GraphQL
  • Have experience with Docker and Kubernetes
  • Have professional experience working remotely
  • Have contributed to open source projects
  • Enjoy playing poker!

What we offer

  • Plenty of autonomy for you to work the way you think you're most productive
  • A flexible process with the focus on efficiency of working with minimal bureaucracy
  • A mixture of fun and challenging projects working on a real-time game
  • Competitive salary (negotiable and depending on experience/skills)

Mid-level Rails developer

We are seeking a mid-level back-end developer (Rails) who is looking for opportunities to lead a software team and work with a range of Rails apps and Shopify e-commerce builds. As part of Pixelcabin’s engineering team, you will build e-commerce solutions predominantly on the Shopify platform, by extending the native functionality using Rails for applications and augmenting complex front-end builds. Your role will also include managing a developer team through the various stages of a project, and receiving business problems from stakeholders and translating these into elegant, technical solutions.

This is a role for someone who is excited to have ownership of projects, has experience with managing a team of developers, and is comfortable working in a TDD environment where code quality is prioritised over speed. You will also have an exceptional attention to detail, experience with building scalable applications, and excellent problem-solving skills. It is a bonus if you have worked remotely before, although this is not a requirement.

We offer:
  • The ability to work from anywhere in the world (see timezone details below)
  • Salary of £35k–£45k, depending on experience
  • Flexible workspace / equipment allowance
  • Professional development allowance
  • Excellent support for setting up an ideal remote working environment
  • An annual team retreat (different locations every year!)
  • A Pixelcabin laptop (our team usually uses Macbook Pros or Dell XPS 13s, but feel free to ask for what allows you to do your job best!)
  • 30 days holiday
  • Generous maternity / paternity package

In this role, you will:
  • Design, build, and maintain clean, reusable, and reliable Rails apps
  • Lead a team of developers, including running sprint planning meetings and leading code review processes
  • Deliver readable, well-documented, and efficient code
  • Develop code solutions that enable our clients to reach their long-term goals
  • Contribute to the evolution of our development workflows and tooling
  • Implement software best practices, such as refactoring

About you:

  • Highly proficient with Git and GitHub
  • Experience developing scalable Rails apps that can easily handle spikes in traffic
  • Exceptional programming skills (you can produce high-quality code that is maintainable, efficient, reliable and secure)

  • Experience developing APIs as part of an application’s architecture
  • Agile, lean, or similar development methodologies/experience
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication in English
  • High level of attention to detail
  • Well-organized and self-motivated

It’s a bonus if you also have:
  • Experience with the Shopify platform
  • Made contributions to open-source projects
  • A bachelor’s degree in a STEM field (or equivalent education)
  • An understanding of Web Application Security (OWASP)
  • Worked remotely in the past

At Pixelcabin, our team is small, steadily growing and fully distributed. Because working remotely has been part of our DNA since day 1, we believe in offering a great remote working environment for everyone in our team. You will get support with setting up your work routine so that it’s enjoyable, even easy, to do your best work. By using excellent tooling (Slack, Notion, Invision, Pivotal Tracker, and any that you suggest) and encouraging you to create a unique setup that works for you (everyone is different!), we will help ensure that you can work efficiently, feel inspired, and collaborate smoothly with your team.

Every year, we organise a retreat/meetup in a sunny place so that we can bring everyone together, get away from our desks, and bridge the remote-working gap for a few days. On these meetups, we also explore ideas for the future direction of the company. (Last year, the team came together for a week in Hong Kong. Prior to that we went to San Francisco and Miami.) Since our clients are also remote, we occasionally travel to spend time embedded in their offices. This also provides time for us to come together and hang out as a team.

On a day-to-day basis, you will be communicating frequently with other team members through a range of channels (daily video calls, demoing / pairing via screen-share and Invision). Since we believe that good teamwork relies on open dialogue, you need to be someone who is comfortable with raising questions and issues. You also need to be self-motivated and experienced with taking tasks through to completion.

Timezone details
Given that we are a remote team distributed across different time zones, we have a flexible approach to work schedule. That said, during your first year of working with us, we would usually expect you to cross at least 5 hours of 8am–6pm (GMT+0) from Monday to Friday.

Diversity policy
Pixelcabin is committed to building a culturally diverse company, and we value a broad set of opinions in our team. As we grow, we are looking to build a team with a range of viewpoints at its core, and we encourage applications from female and minority candidates.

To apply: Please send all applications to jobs@pixelcabin.io, including your Github, LinkedIn, and any other relevant links. The email body should include cover letter content, with a CV as an attachment (only required if no LinkedIn). The subject of your email should be ‘2019 Mid-Level Rails Developer Application’. Application emails without this subject will be automatically screened-out and not read.

  • I work hard because I want to do the best that I can right now
  • I always observe and reflect on how to do better tomorrow
  • I like animals

  • Ability to design, write and test code, algorithms, whether in the front-end, back-end, you-name-it (Cloud Functions?)
  • Ability to switch between languages, not vendor-locked-in
  • A principled approach to development. You should be opinionated but you should be die-hard about your opinions because after all, maybe you're wrong (but maybe not?)
  • The understanding that any one line of code written can lead to catastrophic consequences if not thought out carefully! (Am not kiddin', just look at the heartbleed security issue)
  • Ability to code in either Javascript/Node, Go or Python (or PHP….)
  • Ability to switch between frameworks (front-end, back-end, you-name-it)
  • An eye for design and a good front-end skills. Maybe not pixel perfect level but the ability to develop something that will look good and work across devices

  • Build a platform and an ecosystem of services that will in turn make for a great UX for pet parents and clinics!
  • Build, deploy and maintain your own work
  • Learn anything you feel like that's necessary for the job, however challenging, however you like it
  • Be part of an exciting adventure

How to know if you are a good fit?

You will have to:

  • Have empathy;
    • Understanding the position of others is critical. It is necessary to navigate through communication, mitigation and the culture
  • Be independent;
    • Yet know when to raise a point or ask for a clarification or escalate a potential issue
  • Communicate;
    • Speak your mind and expect others to. Engage in respectful and mindful conflict. Quality > quantity.
  • Know your stuff and know what you don't know;
    • No one is perfect but everyone can learn. Be humble enough to know your weaknesses. Be open minded and hard working enough to be able to fix them.
  • Take constructive critics;
    • Ask yourself "how to know if I'm wrong?". You may not, but not challenging your thinking is unhealthy. We challenge each other a lot @Scratchpay.

Our culture

We care about the human aspect of work and we expect others to. Excellence is also an important keyword @ Scratchpay. While everyone makes mistakes, we learn from them. We are conscious about efficiency and effectiveness in the positive way. We don't do things that bring low-to-no value short or long term. We also do hard things that bring a lot of value. Quality, attention to detail and respect are some of the traits you must have and expect others to have.

The good

  • We are a team of dedicated, hard working, friendly individuals
  • We move fast, sometimes break things with measure, we give a second chance
  • We give constructive feedback, we challenge each other
  • We are open-minded and we care for each other
  • Everyone is striving towards excellence. Mediocrity isn't our cup of tea. But we always work hard to help those that are willing to get there!

The bad

  • Everything goes fast and the ultimate goal is to move the business fast. There can be disconnects in the communication at times. We all need to navigate through this and push whenever it is critical to do so.
  • We are open-minded but things need to be moving forward.
  • We say what we have to. So expect to hear some unpleasant - but true - things sometimes. Don't hesitate to argue back - with respect - if you disagree.
  • Like any startup, It can be a mess some days. You also will likely have to do things that aren't in your scope sometimes. Part of the fun, right? ;)

The most important is: We are always looking at improving. All the time, step by step. If you feel mediocre and don't see a path to improvement or can't listen to others' voice to, please do not apply.
